Thinking about your logo design… a great logo should:

Distinguish your company from your competition

Don’t try to emulate another company. Be your own brand. If you do emulate then pick the best to aim for

Be memorable

A logo design should be eye catching and innovative. A logo design should make a statement your company

Be simple

A logo design can have some elaborate features but it should be simple enough to make a quick statement. A logo design should show up well when it is scaled down and not lose detail

Be unique

If the logo design resembles someone else’s, you may possibly lose clients through the confusion. Worse than that you might get a letter from the other company or their solicitor telling you they are taking you to court.

Use meaningful colors

Different colors and shades can have different effects on people because of color association. A logo should have a grayscale version for publishing in black and white

Avoid distracting elements

A logo design does not need pty, ltd, inc, and other government regulation type details. These types of detail can be saved for documentation and letterheads

Avoid taglines if possible

Taglines can be an important part of a company’s image but you should separate your statement about the company from a logo design, even though they may well appear together when you print them

Avoid being too decorative

A logo should not appear to clever or intricate. A logo should avoid heavy decoration and wild combinations of color. Avoid fancy techniques available in graphics software that only look good on the screen. If you can’t send your logo through a fax machine and still recognise it then it’s probably too complicated. Photos are not logos even if you put your name on them.
